Where the Danube and the Planina keep the best of Baranya just for you!

Hike & Bike

Located at Croatia’s northeasternmost point, the Draž area reveals the untouched beauty of the Danube, its ancient riverbeds, and backwaters. Along the Old Danube, the most famous of these, you’ll understand why so many say they don’t need the sea when they have the Danube.

If you head from the water towards higher ground, your journey will take you to Bansko brdo, or as we locals call it – Planina – the Mountain (probably the lowest one in the world 😊). Explore the old vineyards, learn what surduci and gatori are, visit the Trojnaš viewpoint, and snap a selfie between golden fields and endless skies!

The Baranya Mountaineering Route is the most famous hiking trail in our region. We are also part of the EuroVelo 6 route. Explore local trails and enjoy stunning views in the villages of Draž, Batina, Gajić, Podolje, Topolje, and Duboševica.

The Šokac House

Visiting our region without discovering its cultural heritage would be a real shame! Here, on the banks of Europe’s most important river and at the crossroads of Croatia, Hungary, and Serbia, history has left countless marks. This is powerfully illustrated by the mystical Church of St. Peter and Paul near Topolje, and the monumental memorial to the famous Battle of Batina. Batina itself is a place that, in many ways, symbolizes the soul of Baranya and the Danube region.

However, the region’s most significant cultural legacy is the folklore of the Šokci (pron. /ˈʃo.ktsi/) people of Baranya. The Šokac House (“the house of Šokci”) in Topolje is a place that defies time and reveals the secrets of life in the fertile lands of Baranya in the past. You can also explore The Šokac House through an engaging game, Eva & Stipa – A Playful Courtyard Quest as well as with this audio guide.

Important: The Šokac House is open upon request. Please contact the Draž Tourist Board via email or phone in advance of your visit.

Hunting & Fishing

The untouched landscapes of this part of the Danube region provide a habitat for a wide range of wildlife, both on land and in water. Draž is a hidden fishing paradise in Europe, with over 400 hectares of fishing waters, including backwaters and the main river flow. It is home to 44 fish species, such as catfish, carp, pike, and zander, all of which reach impressive trophy sizes thanks to excellent spawning and growth conditions.

Draž’s most popular hunting ground, Šarkanj-Vrblje, is managed by the Troga company. The area’s forests and thickets are home to approximately 20 species of game, with red deer – often boasting impressive antlers—roe deer, and wild boar taking the spotlight. There is also a large population of pheasants, wild ducks, geese, quail, hares, and other small game, particularly foxes.

Festivities & Activities

While the charms of Draž can be enjoyed year-round, certain dates truly stand out on the calendar. Enthusiasts of traditional carnival customs shouldn’t miss the Baranja Buše, one of Croatia’s last authentic carnival processions. As summer begins, immerse yourself in the unique Festival tista (The Pastry Festival) and the vibrant Baranja Bećarac. For those seeking a blend of indulgence and activity, Landranje Baranjom (Baranja Wandering) – a renowned hiking and poetry tour – offers the perfect mix. Cycling enthusiasts will also enjoy the spirited Deer & Bike caravans.
